“I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” G.K. Chesterton
Thanksgiving is upon us, and beyond every sweet and savory dish that graces our family table, I most look forward to sitting down to a meal with loved ones and reflecting on the year together. I’m easily the sappiest member of the family, so don’t think this ritual doesn’t require a little effort and persistence to get others involved. Push past any awkwardness of vulnerability, shove aside the temptation to be sarcastic or surface-level, and share snippets of thanksgiving out loud with the ones around you. As G.K. Chesterton said, gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. Wonder at the beauty of your children who have grown before your eyes; wonder at how the seasons scrolled past and you thrived; wonder at the way your garden flourished or your career blossomed or your circle of friends expanded; wonder even at the miracle of schedules aligning this year to allow everyone a day of cooking and feasting and resting together. Let your happiness double with each mention of wonder and grace that arrived this year.
Thanksgiving has a reputation for food, football, and family – but not always for genuine gratitude. This year, I urge you to take time to reflect on and recite the most meaningful moments and share them with those around you. You can download our free printable below and set the table with it to encourage this ritual, and I challenge you not to trash these at the end of the meal with all the table scraps and crumpled napkins. Store them among your Thanksgiving decor – tuck them in a tablecloth, place them in your gravy boat – somewhere you’ll be delighted to pull them out from next year. And then set the table with them again, reminiscing on past blessings & moments of thanks, and cultivating a heart of gratefulness and joy with this highest form of thought and tradition.
Have a very Happy Thanksgiving, however it looks for you and yours. We hope you find times of rest, reflection, and gratefulness amidst all the joys of food, football & family this year.
